GMC ELECTRICAL, INC. / OUR STORY
Since 1984, GMC has brought reference electrode development, manufacturing, and application knowledge together under one name.
Meet our founder ↗
IN HONOR OF OUR FOUNDER
Founder, GMC Electrical, Inc.
His work helped shape our products.
His legacy remains part of everything we build.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Gary L. Matlack began his career in the corrosion control industry. In 1984, he founded GMC Electrical, Inc. and brought STAPERM brand reference electrodes to market, including the first all-ceramic permanent reference electrodes and the industry’s first zinc–zinc sulphate reference electrode.
For our family, Gary’s legacy is personal. He was our founder and our father. We honor him through the company he started, the work he made possible, and our commitment to carrying it forward.
This portrait, one he loved, shows Gary alongside his service dog, Buddy. It has a special place here as a remembrance of the man behind GMC.
OUR BEGINNINGS
When Gary founded GMC in 1984, he brought more than 17 years of corrosion-control experience spanning cathodic protection design, testing, installation, and permanent reference electrode development.
His development of all-ceramic permanent and zinc–zinc sulphate reference electrodes gave GMC a distinct foundation in reference electrode technology. That history remains central to the STAPERM name and to the products we manufacture today.
That combination of field experience and product development continues to guide GMC. We consider how an electrode will be installed, the environment it will encounter, and the measurements it needs to support.
Industry recognition
GMC Electrical, Inc. received the NACE International Western Area Outstanding Company of the Year award in 2000.
WHAT WE BUILD ON
GMC is the original developer of all-ceramic permanent and zinc–zinc sulphate reference electrodes. Our product range reflects that history of developing reference electrodes for practical field applications.
Analytical-grade materials and tighter manufacturing tolerances support accurate measurements. Model-specific performance information is available in our product specifications.
Underground, concrete, freshwater, seawater, and deep-water installations have different requirements. We help customers identify the appropriate chemistry and configuration for their project.
CONTINUING INNOVATION
The spirit of development that launched STAPERM continues to guide how we improve our products and respond to new project requirements.
Our work extends beyond a single electrode design. PCIR assemblies bring reference electrodes and monitoring coupons together for underground cathodic protection measurements and AC mitigation assessment. STAPERM test stations provide connection points for field measurements, while portable, concrete, thru-hull, and deep-water models address different installation needs.
We continue to explore improvements in electrode materials, configurations, and manufacturing methods, with accuracy, service life, and practical installation at the center of that work. Customer feedback and field requirements help identify where further development can make a meaningful difference.
For GMC, continuing Gary’s legacy means preserving the knowledge behind our products while remaining open to better ways to build, test, and support them.
GMC TODAY
Our family and team continue the company Gary founded, serving the people who design, install, and maintain corrosion control systems.
The STAPERM range includes permanent and portable reference electrodes, PCIR electrode and coupon assemblies, and thru-hull configurations. We also provide cathodic protection materials, test stations, and related monitoring products.
Whether you are selecting a reference electrode, specifying coupon area and lead wires, or preparing an RFQ, we welcome a direct conversation about your requirements.
